why is the local church even important? (aka, "mission together" because of "mission to")

Why is the "local church" even important? Part of the answer lies in understanding the mission of God. Part of the answer lies in understanding our need for one another.

I would suggest that the importance of the "local church" is first and foremost defined by the mission of God. Some teachers say, and I happen to agree with them:

"It's not that God church has a mission. It's that God's mission has a church."

The Gospel and the mission to dispel the message of God's near love unto all the world to every neighbor and nation was around long before people started coming up with church growth strategies. It was around long before Christ came as a baby. It was around before time began. Jesus poured Himself into a select group of leaders, modeling life together and "on earth as it is in heaven" with them, in order to then send them out on mission.

"In the same way that You gave Me a mission in the world, I am giving them a mission in the world."
~John 17:18, the Message

We have been sent. Let's call this "MISSION TO..."

Now, any time we are sent on a mission, the implication is difficulty, lack of comfort, need of endurance, and desire of encouragement. Thus, we need others to be on mission with us. And so the local church becomes important also because of this required togetherness for mission.

Let's call this "MISSION TOGETHER..."

SO, it is the "MISSION TO" that necessitates the "MISSION TOGETHER." We have "MISSION TOGETHER" because of the "MISSION TO."

Here's a question:

do you want to find a local church or do you need to be a part of a local church?

The former indicates a possible consumer approach to finding a church that fits you and your schedule. The latter indicates a probable recognition of how hard walking on mission with God daily really is and therefore there is a growing necessity for others to walk on that mission with you.

Could it be then concluded:

IF YOU DON'T NEED A LOCAL CHURCH, A GROUP OF PEOPLE ON MISSION TOGETHER WITH YOU, THEN ARE YOU EVEN LIVING ON MISSION WITH GOD? Are you living as He intended?

You are not living as He intended if you are not living sent. And if you don't need an intentional group of people to walk beside you as you venture out on this dangerous mission of taking the Gospel daily unto neighbors and nations, then you are most likely taking seriously the mission of God.

May we actually go and make disciples. May we live sent.

Below, check out this awesome video of a church family in Tacoma, WA living on mission together and mission to Tacoma, and then please process these three questions.

  • Am I following Jesus, believing that God so loved the world and living WITH Him rather that just FOR Him?

  • Is the mission of God and His Gospel a central motivation and desire of my life, or is there something else central?

  • Will I surrender to Him and His mission, asking Him to know who are the lost around me in whom He wants me to plant the Gospel and water with love, begging Him to reorient the rhythms of my everyday life to live on mission with Him?

Comments welcome...

Love  y'all! Grateful to be the church together.
